Beyond the Clinic

Our Journey with Human Nature Adventure Therapy

The Seaton Foundation and Human Nature Adventure Therapy share a bond that stretches back to our very beginning. As our inaugural grantee, we have had the privilege of walking beside them as they grew from the vision of one dedicated psychologist into a vital regional service that has supported hundreds of young people.

A Vision for Healing in Nature

The story began with founder Andy Hamilton’s belief that traditional clinical settings aren't always the right fit for every young person. He saw that for those navigating complex life challenges, true connection and healing often happen more naturally in the outdoors. We were proud to back this vision from its earliest stages, helping it transform into a sophisticated organisation that meets young people where they are—on the beach, in the bush, or around a campfire.

A Decade of Transformation

  • Recre8: The signature 3-month program featuring a 10-day wilderness expedition, providing at least 150 therapeutic hours for each participant.
  • Activ8: Individual counselling and mentoring delivered in non-clinical settings for those needing consistent, tailored support.
  • Elev8: A space for peer connection and youth leadership, engaging young people through local activities like snorkeling and bushwalks.
  • Inclusive Reach: Human Nature remains deeply inclusive, with strong participation from Aboriginal and LGBTQIA+ communities.

The Legacy: A Full Circle

The most powerful evidence of this work is the "Human Nature legacy". One young woman first connected with the team on a therapeutic expedition, where she found the safety to share her story and begin her healing journey. After progressing through intensive one-on-one and group programmes, her journey has come full circle.

The Road Ahead: Meaningful Employment

We are excited to continue our partnership as Human Nature embarks on its next chapter: the transition to the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model. This evolution focuses on giving young people the practical skills and confidence they need to engage in meaningful employment, ensuring they have the tools to build a thriving, independent future.

The whole experience was like finding the good in all the rough.
